One Symbol That Can Improve Your Search Engine Promotion

January 17th, 2008 by admin

Many of you know the old search engine promotion strategy of putting keywords in the URLs of your web sites. Nothing new, but quite effective.

But thanks to the latest news from Google - shared during WordCamp 2007 - now you can find out that you might have been doing a critical mistake before. Because it turns out that underscoring symbol was not accepted by Google as word separator.

This means that if in your attempt to make web site more search engine friendly you used something like this for your URLs: your-domain-name.com/keyword1_keyword2 …then you have been picking the people who have been searching for keyword1_keyword2.

In other words, having your-domain.com/free_mortgage_calculator or your-domain.com/free_mp3_downloads was sending you people who typed into the search field free_mortgage_calculator or free_mp3_downloads. Of course, no one types keywords into search in this weird way; most of the people would type in "free mortgage calculator" or "free mp3 downloads" - at least most of the people would search like this.

Imagine how much traffic you might be losing by using underscoring! Plus all your efforts to put keywords into URLs went in vain.

Does It Mean that Underscoring Is Out of SEO Game?

On the contrary - the underscoring symbol is only coming on the field, because now Google is officially accepting it as the separating symbol for the keywords in the URLs. That is why those of you who heard the rumor about underscoring being of no value - don’t hurry up to change your site URLs - this information is old. Now underscoring comes into the official love and blessing from big G.

As you can see the search engine promotion tip is simple. Want to add more focus on your site for specific keywords - use underscoring to separate the words in URLs. And don’t forget that hyphens also work this way.
